alabama state bar young lawyers section

One of the goals of the Young Lawyers Section of the Alabama State Bar is to assist lawyers around Alabama in making a difference in their communities.  Volunteering on a subcommittee will give you an opportunity to server your community and your profession, all while networking with other lawyers.  Volunteering will involve a time commitment, but the experience will not only be rewarding personally and professionally -- but great FUN as well!!

Below you will find information about various subcommittees of the YLS.  Check the committees that you have an interest in and one of the YLS officers will be in touch with you to speak with you further about your selections.  At that time you will have an opportunity to make a final decision about where you would like to make a contribution of time, talent, and energy.

Check one or more committees that could use your talents!
Sandestin CLE -  This committee is responsible for organizing the annual CLE in Sandestin hosted by the Young Lawyers, arranging speakers, and organizing various events during the CLE.
.
Iron Bowl CLE - This committee is responsible for organizing the annual CLE in Birmingham or Montgomery hosted by the Young Lawyers on the Friday prior to the Auburn/Alabama game and arranging speakers.
.
Admissions Ceremony - One of the most exciting events in a new attorney's life is the Admissions Ceremony. The Alabama Supreme Court, the Court of Civil Appeals and the Court of Criminal Appeals participate in what we hope will be an informational and inspirational ceremony. This is an opportunity for the new admittee to share his or her accomplishments with his or her friends and family. This committee is responsible for organizing the admissions ceremonies in May and October. The organization of this event includes sending out information to new admittees and being present during the ceremony to insure the event runs smoothly.
.
Diversity in the Law (including Minority Pre-Law Conference) - One of the goals of the Young Lawyers Section of the Alabama State Bar is to assist lawyers around Alabama in making a difference in their communities. The Minority Pre Law Conference is one such endeavor. The Minority Pre Law Conference was started over 15 years ago by members of the Executive Committee of the Young Lawyers Section. Teenagers from schools around Central Alabama are invited to participate in a real case study, given actual fact scenarios, and a trial is held. Students are often given the opportunity to participate in the trial as jurors. The Capital City Bar Association now runs the Minority Pre Law Conference in conjunction with the YLS. This year, the YLS is planning on expanding the Minority Pre Law Conference and hosting an event in Birmingham with a long term goal of hosting events in other cities across the State.
.
FEMA - The Alabama Young Lawyers Section is always looking for volunteer lawyers across the State who are willing to step in and assist with providing legal representation in the event a disaster occurs in our State. This program provides an excellent opportunity for young lawyers to donate their time to people in our community who are in need.
.
ABA/Affiliate Outreach - The ABA/Affiliate Outreach Committee will be the committee that acts as a conduit between the ABA Young Lawyer Division, the YLS Executive Committee, and the regional Young Lawyers Committees. This committee will facilitate communications between these three entities and keep the YLS Executive Committee up to date on what the regional young lawyers programs are doing. This committee will also provide information to update the website about what the activities of the ABA YLD is doing and what the local young lawyers groups are doing. This committee will also help facilitate other locations that may want to begin a YLS regional committee and help encourage larger areas to start young lawyers sections of their regional bar associations.
.
Website/Publicity/Publications - This committee will facilitate the transfer of information and activities from other various committees to the website and news providers to keep other young lawyers and the public aware of our activities and how the YLS can be of service.
.
Long Range Planning - This committee will help analyze the activities of the YLS and determine how activities need to be continued, discontinued, or changed. It will also be responsible for assessing the needs of the public and other young lawyers and determining how the YLS can better meet those needs.
.
Community Service Projects (including Speakfirst) - Community service is a hallmark of any young lawyer program. While many young lawyers are involved in their community, this committee will help organize YLS volunteers to better provide community service in their communities and to help determine the needs of various community projects and help provide various services to communities across the state.
.
Special Grants - From time to time, the YLS is approached by an attorney who has a great idea on how to do something for his or her community but needs help in funding that activity. This committee will analyze the requests for various legal-related, charitable activities and try to coordinate funding for those activities.
.
Law School Relations - This committee will work with the law schools in Alabama to present a program to the third-year students about the YLS and is basically going to be a way for the YLS to introduce itself to law students during the third year. This committee will be responsible for contacting all four law schools, making the inroads with the deans there in an attempt to determine what needs there may be for the 3rd year students that we can help meet, and then setting up programs that meet those needs.
.
A Lawyer in Every Classroom - This new program will organize volunteer lawyers to go to schools when requested by the teachers and inform teachers of this service.
